My father drowned when I was five years old. A picture of me, framed in gold plastic, was fished from his pocket and returned to my mother with a soggy wallet and a bunch of keys. The keys were to our new terraced house, now paid for with his life insurance.


Andrea Ashworth

Andrea Ashworth was born in Manchester in 1969 and educated at Oxford, where she is now a research Fellow. Her memoir, Once in a House on Fire is published by Picador in the UK and Owl Books in the US. It won the Somerset Maugham Award from the Society of Authors in 1999.
